Weed Control

Spring is almost here. The days are getting warmer, leaves are showing on the plants again, grass is turning green, and people are beginning the yearly process of getting their lawns back into shape. One major problem throughout the year on turf grass is weed control.

To help minimize weeds in turf and ornamental beds, try one of the following forms of pre-emergent herbicide:

  • Fertilizers with pre-emergent (to feed and protect areas at the same time)
  • Granular form pre-emergent (for the areas you do not want to fertilize)
  • Liquid or powder pre-emergent (which can be mixed and sprayed onto the target areas)

Pre-emergent herbicides are generally only effective if they are applied before the annual grass weeds emerge. Therefore, early spring applications are essential for a satisfactory result. After the chosen product is spread over the target area it must be watered in so that the chemical is moved to the soil layer where it will form an herbicide barrier. As temperatures rise, weed seeds will begin to germinate. When the emerging leaves make contact with the pre-emergent barrier, they will stop growing and die. This should give us a spectacular weed-free surface.
