When it comes to overseeding, you can do more than just prepare lawns for changes in the seasons. Applying new seed to a site is also an excellent erosion control option. An efficient and effective way to do this is hydro-seeding.
Whether you are applying new seed to manage erosion or to stabilize slopes on a jobsite, hydro-seeding is fast, creates more uniform germination and saves you time and labor costs, all while retaining soil as seed germinates.
To begin hydro-seeding, mix hydromulch, tackifier or a binding agent and seed with water in a large mechanical or jet agitation hydroseed machine (or tank). For best results, include a fertilizer and additives like soil amendments or even bio-stimulants to feed the soils as seeds germinate and begin to root.
This mix creates a slurry that is rich in nutrients for the seed, which is then sprayed on the site. The results? Quick coverage, fast soil protection and improved germination.
Your local Ewing store can explain the different hydro-mulch options to choose from based on the site conditions. Some base hydromulches are ideal for flat common hydroseeding applications, while other value-added hydromulches like bonded fiber matrix (BFM) are intended for slopes or more extreme site conditions.
BFMs and other value added hydromulches come with tackifiers and binders in the bale with no need to add other tackifiers or binding agents. Base hydromulches are made from paper, wood/paper blend, 100% wood, straw, or recycled cellulose fibers for a more affordable option.
BFMs are also made from paper, wood or straw. A common seed option is an annual rye and Bermuda blend. The rye provides fast growth and gives the Bermuda the time it needs to germinate. Ask about what seed mixture is best for you. Ewing also offers erosion control seed mixes for your site or specification needs.
Another, newer option for hydraulically applied products that address soil fertility are Hydraulic Growth Mediums (HGMs) or Biotic Soil Amendments (BSAs). HGMs replace traditional soil prepping of topsoil and compost applied with a hydroseeder without the need to mechanically incorporate (or till) into the subsoil like traditional topsoil and compost. BSAs add nutrients to existing soil conditions to amend soil fertility, as well.
