Spring Forward: Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday!

At 2 a.m. on March 8, most of the U.S. will begin Daylight Saving Time.

For the summer, an hour of daylight is moved from the morning to the evening to extend the amount of after-work daylight hours and create long summer evenings. This offers people the chance to spend more time outside in the evenings, doing activities, shopping, or just spending time with family and friends in their backyards.

While Benjamin Franklin is credited with coming up with the idea, it was only officially adopted during World War I as a way to save coal/energy. More than 70 countries now participate.

In the U.S., participation isn’t mandatory, but Arizona (excluding the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii are the only states that currently do not participate. Several other states have been looking into ending Daylight Saving Time, including Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Studies have shown that Daylight Saving Time reduces energy consumption, but what most people notice is the one less hour of sleep they’ll get on March 8. The National Sleep Foundation has some tips to help you reset your sleep habits as you reset your clocks.

Do you love Daylight Saving Time, or hate it? Is your state thinking of switching to Standard Time? Leave a comment to let us know!
