Green wall pioneers will explore the benefits and best practices of vertical gardening in Texas, including Luis Andrade, account manager for Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply, on April 28 during the 2016 conference of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Texas Chapter in Fort Worth, Tex. The conference is April 27 – 29 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

The panel, Vertical Gardens: Lessons Learned From Four Living Wall Pioneers in Texas, will cover basic terminology, benefits of living walls, types of living wall systems, plant selection and recommendations, maintenance issues and living wall aesthetics.

“There is a science to living wall management. With living walls, you are putting plants in an area that is not their natural habitat,” Andrade said, “and keeping those plants and roots healthy can be difficult.”

The panel discussion will cover fertigation, how to spoon-feed nutrients to a system, irrigation and how to water enough to keep plants alive without damaging the wall.

Joining Andrade will be Daryl McCann, PLA, director of design at McDugald-Steele, a landscape architectural, construction and management firm headquartered in Houston and Austin. Andrade and McCann participated in the construction of a green wall at a grocery store near Houston in 2014.

Also speaking are Bruce Dvorak, PLA, associate professor and Master of Landscape Architecture program coordinator at Texas A&M University, and Nick Moser of Flying Carpet Creative.

The Texas Chapter of the American Society Landscape Architects promotes the practice of landscape architecture and advances the profession through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship. The Texas Chapter was first established in 1959 as a larger regional chapter known as the Southwest Chapter. The current Texas Chapter was created in 1978.
