Get faster seed germination, fewer runtimes and more!
Soon warm season grasses will be turning brown and the lackluster lawns will be off limits as new seeds take root.
This fall, speed up that awkward turf transition and give seeds a jump-start with something new … and no, it’s not a fertilizer.
AquaSmart Pro is a super-absorbent polymer-coated sand that holds 12 times its weight in water, creating a moisture-rich soil for improved seed germination and plant growth.
We asked two of Ewing’s turf specialists, Dennis Kemp in Chandler, Ariz., and Scott Furtak in Bakerfield, Calif., for their tips for adding AquaSmart Pro for a successful overseeding program.
What makes AquaSmart PRO ideal for overseeding?
Scott: An increased percentage of seed germination and the possibility of using less seed…and faster germination of seed.
Dennis: It will offer fewer start times for watering and shorter run times as well, saving water.
What application rate do you recommend?
Dennis: For overseeding, I like 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet with a light compost mulch. But 40 pounds is needed if irrigation coverage is bad or start times are few.
Scott: I'm perfectly comfortable at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet on turf or sod applications.
How should AquaSmart PRO be applied after sowing seeds?
Scott: A drop spreader or rotary can be used, however, I would stick to a drop type if there is any discernible wind.
Ideally, I like to aerify or do something of that nature for sub soil applications, but you can put it directly on top if there is a decent turf canopy. Then water the heck out of it after the initial application! This is very, very important!*
Dennis: A drop spreader is suggested but I have used a rotary spreader to get the job done. Also, have some way of marking where you last application pass was.
*Note: The manufacturer recommends applying one heavy watering (about double the usual run time) to fully hydrate the product. Then return to normal run times, but watering frequency may be reduced by up to 50 percent.
Where else have you seen AquaSmart PRO used successfully recently?
Dennis: I have had great luck when using AquaSmart under sod with an organic starter. Also for Bermudagrass interseeding on a football field—in June, following aerification—at a rate of 40 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Scott: We had success using it on localized dry spots on a football field in Los Banos, Calif., and for flower plantings at an upscale residence.
