How Do We Engage Those Apathetic in Our Industry to Care about their Future?

I've had the opportunity to host several Ewing WaterWise Symposiums focusing on the latest water conservation issues throughout the country over the last few months, and one of the topics that keeps coming up in the discussion at these events is how do we engage those who don't participate in caring about what happens to the "Green Industry" in the future. More often than not, the people who usually attend these types of conservation related events are usually the ones who already care, and are adopting conservation practices and products in their business.

There are SO many more people out in our Green Industry universe who don't care, or just figure that it's not their problem. They're also the ones who complain the most about new regulations and restrictions that affect their business and livelihood. I'm sure this isn't a problem that's unique only to our industry.

I feel that in this new world of social media and the Internet, there are plenty of ways to reach out to people. There are also many professional organizations that are fighting for their rights on a daily basis.

So my question is, what do we do? Do we not worry about them, and figure that if they're not involved, they'll get what they deserve? Do we continue to beat our heads against the wall (so to speak), and continue to try and get them to participate in the dialogue and issues as they come up? I welcome your feedback and ideas, and would enjoy conversing about it.
