In dry regions like Arizona, precision irrigation is everything. If the system isn’t dialed in, turf stress shows up fast. Evapotranspiration (ET) becomes a key guide in those environments, helping factor in temperature, wind, humidity, and rainfall when making irrigation decisions.
When monsoon season hits, everything shifts quickly. For example, the humidity rises, disease pressure increases, and irrigation needs often decrease.
In humid climates, the challenge moves away from water demand and more toward moisture management. Drainage and disease control become the priority, and even small increases in soil moisture can create problems if conditions stay wet for too long.
Across both environments, the goal stays the same: keep turf healthy without tipping the balance too far in either direction.
Mowing Height as a Stress Tool
Mowing is one of those practices that can quietly have a big impact on how turf handles heat.
When the height of cut is too low, the plant loses leaf surface area and has less energy to recover. That directly affects root development and overall stress tolerance, especially when temperatures stay high for extended periods.

Cultivation practices, like aerification, topdressing, and verticutting, remain some of the most important long-term tools. They improve air and water movement into the root zone and help the plant develop a stronger, more resilient system over time.
