6 Steps for an Easier Golf Overseeding Season

Many superintendents are already thinking about preparing their greens for fall and winter and with good reason—it can be a make a break time for business.

For a smooth overseeding season, Phil Brown, Agronomic & Turf Products Account Manager, and Brian Hurley, National Golf Sales Manager, have a few simple steps that can help ensure success, so you can get the course ready for play.

1. Inspect your irrigation.

You know how vital water is during those first few days after overseeding—so be sure you’ve got even coverage and that all your rotors are in good working order.

As a Rain Bird Golf supplier in 13 states and with more than 200 locations across the U.S., you can count on Ewing to get the parts you need in time for overseeding.

2. Be selective about seed.

Every golf course is different—whether you’re looking for greens grade, fairway seed or blend options, Ewing has a seed that can meet your needs.

Ewing provides a variety of turf seed from major vendors like Mountain View, from all-purpose ryegrass to superior weed-free seed.

Talk with your local Ewing about your seed specs and specific needs to get a quote. You can also save with Ewing’s bulk-purchase discounts on large seed orders.

3. Enhance the soil for good establishment.

A soil enhancer is the best way to ensure good root establishment, drought tolerance and nutrient retention.

Mirimichi Green’s CarbonizPN and Holganix products are two soil enhancement options that have been impressing superintendents.

These products improve soil moisture retention, helping you conserve water while still achieving good seed establishment. They can also help retain more nutrients in the soil, helping to reduce your chemical inputs.

And of course, you can help seed start off right with a good starter fertilizer. Fertilizer options vary by region, so check with you local Ewing for options including granular, organic and liquid fertilizers.

4. Protect high traffic areas.

Ewing is now supplying courses with Wittek Golf supplies, including stakes and rope—must have items for keeping feet and carts off those germinating seeds.

If you have high traffic areas that never seem to get relief from carts and feet you can add some extra protection and prevent future turf damage with Grass-Cel pavers. These pavers will ease downward pressure and prevent compaction, giving your turf the chance to thrive.
