6 Quick Tips for Retaining Great Employees

Okay, so you hired the right candidate. Help them succeed at your company with these tips for empowering young, talented employees and have them stick around longer than average.

Eliminate unnecessary barriers in the workplace: Ensure your team has all of the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

Be sure to provide them with as much information about their job as possible and give them details about customers and business history, when appropriate. This will help them prepare to better perform their job.

Additionally, ensure the tools they need to complete a job are provided to them. If employees can’t perform their jobs, it can be stressful and lead to dissatisfaction.

Manage and maintain your expectations: Satisfied employees know what is expected of them every day at work. Changing expectations keeps people on edge and creates unnecessary stress.

Monthly or weekly check ins and annual performance reviews can help you and your employees manage expectations so everyone is on the same page about what needs to be done.

Provide constructive criticism and praise: Offer employees both positive feedback as well as constructive criticism.

Constructive criticism helps the employee to know where they need improvement. When an employee knows how they are performing, issues can be corrected early, before they turn into larger problems that could lead to an employee quitting or being fired.

Praise is equally as important to an employee’s workplace satisfaction. A simple “good job” when an employees performs a good day of work can help them feel appreciated every day, not just when they go above and beyond.

Professional development and continuing education opportunities: Keep your employees engaged through continued education or skill development to help them expand their knowledge and talents.

Give them responsibility

Demonstrate your trust in their abilities. This will cause them to invest more of themselves into the business. If an employee feels as though they are part of the team, they’re more likely to continue working for your company.

Reward, recognize and appreciate: Frequently saying thank you goes a long way for employees. Monetary rewards and verbal affirmation make an employee feel as though their hard work is being recognized.

When business owners think of reward systems, they typically put compensation at the top of the list. However, you can’t diminish the importance of recognition and appreciation.

Recognition means acknowledging employees in front of their peers for specific accomplishments achieved, actions taken or attitudes exemplified through their behavior. Appreciation centers on expressing gratitude toward an employee for their actions. Show appreciation to your employees by acknowledging excellent performance.

Be sure to reward your employees with monetary compensation, such as raises, when it’s appropriate.
