3 Ways to Celebrate the Great Outdoors with Your Employees

June is National Great Outdoors Month, celebrating the natural areas surrounding the communities we live in. Americans are encouraged to get out and explore the mountains, rivers, lakes and deserts they see on a regular basis, and many communities plan hiking, camping or kayaking events. Even though June is over, you can still get out and enjoy the outdoors any time of the year!

Exploring nature with employees, coworkers and their families can be a great team-building event and allow everyone to get to know each other on a more personal level. These are some ideas of how you can begin exploring nature. If you use one of these ideas, or come up with your own, share it with us on our Facebook page.

  1. Host a picnic

Planning a company picnic can be an easy way to get to know employees and their families, build camaraderie, and have fun together. It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort either—most people probably won’t have to block out the whole day or drive very far.

Find a public park or recreation area where you can rent some tables, ramadas or other area for a picnic—a park with a playground could be best if you know a lot of kids may come. Pick a time on the weekend when people may have some free time available. Invite your coworkers, and encourage a potluck style meal where everyone brings a dish to share. Don’t forget a soccer ball, football or some wiffle ball gear—or make some cornhole platforms and bring those along!

  1. Organize a group hike

PRIMG Misc HikingHiking is a great way to explore your area. With a small or large group, you can hit the trails and view plants and wildlife you may not have the chance to see otherwise. Stay on the trails, but allow everyone to explore and experience nature. Everyone hikes at a different pace, so have some spots picked out ahead of time to regroup. Safety first—don’t forget to bring water and apply sunscreen, and encourage everyone else to do so, too!

  1. Try something new

Maybe you’ve never been kayaking, but there’s a lake or river nearby that rents kayaks. Or maybe you want to try camping, or horseback riding. Whatever it is that you want to try, there’s someone else out there who wants to try it, too. Exploring the outdoors is more fun with friends. Ask around, suggest a new activity, and you could meet a new friend who works for the same company!
