How Berkeley Hall Golf Club Is Leading the Way in Water Recycling

At Berkeley Hall Golf Club in Bluffton, South Carolina, an innovative water recycling system is making a big impact. The private club, home to two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses, recently installed the ClearWater Recycling Station as part of their commitment to sustainability.

Adam Miller, the club’s proactive superintendent, recognized a growing challenge: managing the water used to wash maintenance equipment and preventing it from becoming waste or causing environmental harm.

With 36 holes to maintain, Berkeley Hall has a large fleet of equipment that requires regular washing. Adam wanted to ensure that the water runoff was not wasted or allowed to contaminate the environment. His goal was to capture, clean, and reuse as much water as possible to conserve this precious resource.

The ClearWater system was the ideal solution. Installed alongside a new wash pad, it collects the water used to clean the equipment. The wash water is then treated with microorganisms, passing through a filtration device, removing solids and aerated with several diffusers providing oxygen to the system enabling the water to be reused for further wash off. The air helps prevent the water going anaerobic.

ClearWater also includes safety features designed to protect the environment. If oil enters the system, an alarm sounds, and the system shuts down immediately. During heavy rain, an overflow pipe on the treated water side of the tank uses gravity to direct excess clean water away safely.

This prevents the tank from overfilling, which could cause the wash pad to back flood or submerge system components. The design ensures that untreated water stays contained, and only clean water is released through the overflow, protecting both the equipment and the surrounding environment.

By choosing ClearWater, Berkeley Hall Golf Club is setting an example of responsible water management and environmental stewardship. The system reduces water waste and keeps contaminants from polluting local ecosystems.
