It’s that time of year again! It may feel like you just survived last year’s overseeding, and now it’s time to overseed your bermudagrass again. To ensure successful overseeding, check out these three tips before you schedule your sites for seeding.
1. Ideal timing: This is crucial to your success. If you seed too early, the bermudagrass may still be growing and increase competition; if you seed too late, the weather may be too cold for the ryegrass to germinate and establish for full coverage.
There’s not just one date that will work—it varies based on your location, and even in one state, there may be various times that is best for specific site conditions. The ideal time is when the bermudagrass has ceased growth, and three to four weeks before the first frost.
2. Soil conditions: Do you know what’s in your soil? Make sure to get a soil test if you don’t, because proper pH and soil conditions make for successful overseeding.
Once you’ve done a soil test and received results from the lab, you can apply the nutrients your soil needs to achieve the results you want.
3. Application rates: For optimal results, you need to plant the right amount of seed.
Follow these application rates suggested for overseeding bermudagrass with perennial ryegrass.
