During this time of the year the soil reaches the ideal temperature to [overseed](https://store.ewingirrigation.com/products/turf-ornamental-pest/empro-products/empro-seed) your customer’s lawn for healthy turf during the upcoming winter months. Here’s what you need to know to have a successful and prosperous season. ## Preparing for Overseeding Once you’ve got your seed, you’ll likely need to store it for a few weeks while waiting for outdoor temperatures to cool enough. When soil temperatures are between 55-65 F you will want to complete the application process. You can ensure your applications go smoothly by having all the right tools and supplies: 1. A spring rake will be helpful to remove thatch and loosen top soil, and increase seed contact with the soil. 2. A hand crank spreader for small lawns and a push or broadcast [spreader](https://www.ewingoutdoorsupply.com/catalog/search?q=Spreaders) for larger areas will help spread seed evenly. 3. Seed rate is important to achieve the desired results. The general seed rates for Ryegrass are 10 - 12lbs/1,000 sq. ft. and for Fescue 6 - 8lbs/1,000 sq. ft. 4. Next, apply a seed topper or [seed cover mulch](https://www.ewingoutdoorsupply.com/catalog/search?q=Seed%20Cover%20Mulch) to condition the soil, prevent seed movement on sloped areas, protect seed from birds and prevent seed from drying out during germination if dry or windy weather occurs. 5. Use a starter fertilizer to give those seeds a strong start. Some options include EMPRO 18-24-12, 5-20-10, 6-24-24 or 5-10-31.
