Sustainability Partners Come Together to Install New Irrigation in Target Hunger Community Garden

October 15, 2018 HOUSTON, TEXAS—More fresh local food will soon be growing in Houston at the Target Hunger Willie H. & Gladys R. Goffney Community Garden.

As part of Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply’s and Audubon International’s commitment to local sustainable solutions and community outreach, the organizations have partnered with manufacturers, Hunter Industries, Landscape Products, Corona Tools and Houston-area contractor, Warren’s Outdoor Living, to install and upgrade the irrigation systems in the Target Hunger community garden.

Target Hunger serves more than 11,000 food-insecure people each month in Houston and distributes more than five million pounds of food annually. Some of that food is grown in the community garden.

On October 13, 2018, Ewing and partners installed drip irrigation in more than 100 raised planter beds to allow Target Hunger to grow even more fresh food to fill the local food pantries throughout the city. Products used in this project included, a Hunter Industries XC Hybrid Controller, a battery operated irrigation controller because the site doesn’t have power capabilities throughout the garden, inline emitter tubing with check valves as well as drip irrigation, wire and more.

“Food gardens are so vital to a healthy, sustainable community. What Target Hunger is doing with their garden will continue to help feed thousands in Houston,” said Warren Gorowitz, Vice President of Sustainability at Ewing. “Community outreach and sustainability are such an integral part of who Ewing is as a company, that working with Target Hunger and our other partners to upgrade the irrigation in this garden was a perfect fit.”

“We’re very happy to partner with Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply to make this wonderful project with Target Hunger a reality,” said Christine Kane, Executive Director of Audubon International. “It allows us to promote the importance of integrating sustainability on the community scale, and to help this wonderful organization carry out its mission in a more environmentally sensitive manner.”
