Like a Boss: Taylor Cicala of ValleyScape

For National Boss’s Day, Ewing is highlighting some of the bosses that make this industry great! Meet Taylor Cicala of Valleyscape Irrigation & Lighting.

Taylor Cicala founded ValleyScape Irrigation & Lighting, based in Temecula, CA, in 2012 and like many Green Industry business owners, you'll usually find him working outside. But first he prepares for each day with a morning ritual for his mind.

“For me that involves learning something new by reading. I find that helps me be more productive and positive throughout the day,” he said.

Then he's at the office around 7:30 a.m. and out consulting by 8:30 a.m. with no time to waste.

“The technicians are scheduled the previous day. I organize my truck, as I work in the field too."

Taylor tries to make sure his business runs smoothly without everyone relying him, so he can spend more time in the field doing what he does best—solving irrigation or lighting problems for clients.

He also sticks to a specific schedule, making time for lunch, emails and calls, and checking in with his technicians, so it all gets done in time for him to be home most days by 5 p.m. to spend time with his wife.

"I find this really helps my day flow well," he said.

Challenges and Successes

When he started the company six years ago, he knew there would be challenges, but was surprised at how intense they can be.

"Financial stress, challenges with employees and clients. . . when it seems like the problems come in waves, it can get really tough," said Taylor. "I try to enjoy the high times because the lows always come, too."

But somethings make the challenging times worth all the effort.

“There is a lot to enjoy about being a boss. I enjoy the freedom, of course, of setting my schedule," Taylor said.

Helping his employees learn and grow, and providing his team with high quality livable wage jobs is another point of pride, as well as helping clients get the best service possible.

"I love being able to help our clients be as absolutely as efficient as possible with their irrigation or landscape lighting," said Taylor. "We've made an effort to be a distinguished contractor with an excellent reputation, following all the rules and regulations placed upon contractors by our state. It brings me great satisfaction to know we are doing business the right way."

Lessons Learned

For Taylor, being a good boss starts with respect for yourself and others.

"A lot of the problems we face as bosses is that head trash we have going on in between our ears. We have to remember our companies provide a necessary service to our communities! Respect your people, because your company can be made or buried by your people. Respect your family, health and your personal time: we all have things we juggle, but all of them are rubber balls except your family and health. They are like glass balls, so be smart."

Finally, his advice is to others is to never be afraid to get help from someone wiser than you.

"So many times we get caught up in the everyday goings ons, but find time to learn, apply, improve and grow!"
