Topdress Greens in the Summer

Q: Is it OK to topdress greens in the summer when it's hot?

A: Hot temperatures cause added stress to Poa/ bent greens, and it is right to be concerned about potentially burning the turf. Much of the damage is caused by making applications in the middle of the day when temperatures are at their highest, applying too much sand, and excessive dragging or brushing to work the sand into the turf canopy.

Topdressing of greens can be done successfully if you pay attention to the following three factors:

  • Apply the sand early in the morning before temperatures reach 90°F.
  • The application rate should be very light – approximately 100 lbs. of sand per 1000 sq. ft. – so it can easily filter into the turf. This is best done by using a walk-behind granular fertilizer spreader.
  • Avoid dragging or brushing the sand into the surface and instead rinse the sand into the turf canopy with a light application of water.

If the turf is not growing or showing signs of stress, it is best to suspend topdressing applications until temperatures are cooler and the turf is actively growing.

Please send in any questions you have about turf management to the Ewing Turf Helpline at 480-669-8791 or by email and we will be happy to respond.
