Florida’s green industry is celebrating a legislative victory. Gov. Rick Scott has signed in to law House Bill 535 (HB535), which provides an exemption for the installation of low-voltage landscape lighting beginning July 1.
The new law includes a subsection that states, “A person who installs low-voltage landscape lighting that contains a factory-installed electrical cord with plug that does not require installation, wiring, or other modification to the electrical wiring of a structure” may do so without possessing an electrical contractor’s license.
HB535 will end the confusing and questionable licensing requirements that have existed county by county in Florida for many years. It will open up sales opportunities for lighting manufacturers, distributors, and most importantly for professional contractors who have been apprehensive about adding landscape lighting to their business offering because of the licensing uncertainties.
