Collision of Fortunes: Golf Course Renovation Research Leads The Apawamis Club to a Ewing and Rain Bird Solution

It was the fall of 2016. The Apawamis Club in Rye, NY, found itself in the midst of a transition period.

The demand for better quality turf along with the increasing age of the golf course, first opened in 1890, finally led the board to make a decision to move forward on a master plan from Keith Foster, Architect, and McDonald and Son's Golf Course Builders.

That’s when Mike McCormick came on board as Superintendent after being the Assistant Superintendent at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA.

While working through the first steps including the expansion of fairways, tees and greens, McCormick and the Club realized the need for an adequate, reliable irrigation system upgrade.

The Club decided to work with Irrigation Design Consultant, Mike Kuhn.

As they collectively collaborated, weighing the pros and cons of each of the available irrigation systems, McCormick was impressed with the ease of use of Rain Bird’s Central Control System coupled with the 2-wire IC system.

The decision was made to go with Rain Bird after seeing the new 752 head and its excellent  distribution and uniformity rates.

"As I met Chris Granger from Rain Bird and Fred Rapp of Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply, the comfort level along with the transparency was a big deciding factor."

Then, the last decision the club had to make was the selection of an irrigation contractor.

After some time, and due diligence on McCormick's part, the Club went with Tanto Irrigation based in Elmsford, NY. McCormick said he was impressed by the number of jobs Tanto had completed nationwide and their experience of installation with excessive rocky outcroppings, since The Apawamis Club has considerable rock formations.

The work has started at the Club with the installation of main lines and will continue throughout the fall and winter of 2021.

Along with our partner Rain Bird, we’re looking forward to working with the Club, McCormick and Tanto as we meet their needs for a successful installation of The Apawamis Club’s new irrigation system.
