Everything Ewing does is centered around water. We all need water to support our livelihoods.
The average American uses a total of 2,000 gallons of water per day, according to Change the Course. This includes both direct use (such as watering landscapes) and indirect use (such as growing food). Excluding the water we drink, our diets account for half of our daily water use. This includes the 37 gallons needed to produce a morning cup of coffee or the 634 gallons needed to make a cheeseburger.
Along with the water used to make food, Change the Course also says 30 percent of our water is used to create energy, 10 percent goes to making products and another 10 percent is used for everyday household uses, like drinking and cooking.
Most of us recognize that water is crucial for the survival of ecosystems, but the health of these ecosystems isn’t usually at the forefronts of our minds on a day-to-day basis.
Impact on ecosystems
One ecosystem affected by a lack of water is the Colorado River Delta. Thirty million people depend on the river for their water needs. While it was once a rich wetland, teeming with a diversity of wildlife, it’s now dry from overuse. This isn’t a unique problem. Other rivers and wetlands around the country are suffering the same fate as the Colorado River Delta.
Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s (BEF) Change the Course is a first-of-its-kind initiative that brings together the public, corporations and on the-ground conservation organizations to raise awareness about freshwater issues, reduce water footprints and directly support water restoration projects. To date, Change the Course has supported more than 40 water restoration projects across 11 U.S. states and Mexico, engaged more than 40 corporate partners and restored more than eight billion gallons of water. They work to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater, with an emphasis on individuals taking responsibility for their water usage to become part of the solution.
As The Original Green Way™, Ewing is joining forces with Change the Course, making a donation to the cause. In addition, Ewing is asking people to pledge to conserve water. For every pledge, Change the Course will restore 1,000 gallons of water to an ecosystem in need. Additionally, Ewing and Change the Course will team up with conservation groups to spearhead restoration projects.
Get involved! Take the pledge!
To take the pledge, text “EWING” to 474747. By doing this, 1,000 gallons of water will be restored to an ecosystem on your behalf.
