Earth Day 2022: Remembering the Benefits of Turf

Earth Day was first held April 22, 1970, to demonstrate support for environmental protection. When we consider the overall condition of our planet, it is easy to overlook something as simple as turfgrass and the vital role it plays in our environment.

As we celebrate Earth Day this year, here is a summary of the top 10 ways that turfgrasses contribute to environmental protection and quality of life.

  1. Soil erosion and dust stabilization – A uniform cover of turfgrass holds on to the soil and prevents erosion by wind and water.

  2. Water filtration and flood control – The dense canopy and root system formed by turfgrasses is one of nature’s most effective filters, capturing contaminants contained in water runoff and aiding in flood control.

  3. Carbon storage – Like all green plants, turfgrass captures carbon from the atmosphere in the form of CO2 that is then stored in the soil as organic matter.

  4. Breakdown of organic chemicals and pesticides – The organic matter produced by turfgrasses supports a diverse population of microorganisms that breaks down organic chemicals and pesticides and prevents these compounds from entering the groundwater.

  5. Heat dissipation – Actively growing turfgrass has a significant cooling effect on the environment. On a hot summer day, the surface temperature of turfgrass can be 20 degrees cooler than bare soil and nearly 80 degrees cooler than synthetic turf. This cooling influence is especially important in urban environments where streets and buildings create a heat island effect.

  6. Noise and glare reduction – Turfgrasses near roads and in urban environments absorb noise and reduce glare reflected from buildings and hard surfaces.

  7. Reduced fire hazard and enhanced security – The low fuel content of turfgrass areas serves as a valuable fire break in areas prone to wildfires. Turfgrass areas also provide high visibility zones to monitor activity around homes and buildings.

  8. Wildlife habitat – An integrated landscape of turf, trees, and shrubs provides valuable wildlife habitat, especially in urban areas.

  9. Recreational benefits – Football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, and other sports benefit from the recreational and safety features provided by a healthy and well-maintained turf surface.

  10. Ornamental and aesthetic benefits – Beautiful landscapes and lawns add to the beauty of our cities and neighborhoods. There are also several studies that demonstrate the benefits of viewing gardens and turfgrass areas on the mental health and wellbeing of hospital patients.

Several years ago, the United States Golf Association (USGA) featured the article The Benefits of Golf Course Turf, providing further facts, details, and research on the benefits of turf to our environment.
