The technology world moves at a pace few can keep up with; smart phones, tablets, apps, 3D—so many gadgets, so little time! It’s amazing to see the consumer reaction any time a new tech toy comes to market; there is a feeding frenzy to learn the technology’s features and interface, with the hope and expectation that it will make life easier or more exciting.

Wow, I wish the irrigation industry was that sexy! Web interface, smart phone apps, real time monitoring and management, resource conservation—how cool would that be?

We’ve Got It!

We just need to USE IT! Irrigation manufacturers from the “Big 3” to small, specialized shops have been producing, marketing and selling SMART irrigation products for years now, with proven water savings. However, there is still a disconnect between the technology and most installers/end users.

It is time to force the issue, and stop using the excuses that the technology is too complicated or too expensive. It’s time to engage and learn how to implement a SMART irrigation device with the same commitment and curiosity employed when learning a new phone, TV or video gaming system.

By learning new technologies, we can increase the value of our industry, which can lead to a higher perceived value from clients—and higher revenues.

After all, when was the last time you heard a doctor apologize for charging an exorbitant fee for ordering an MRI for a patient? Or a mechanic for utilizing computerized diagnostic technology to service your car? Never! We don’t understand the technology they use, we just pay the bill. Our industry needs to adopt a similar mentality and utilize the amazing technology that’s available to change the way irrigation systems are designed, installed and maintained.
